Security Film

We evaluate the full glazing system — not just the film — so your investment delivers real protection.

Overview

We are a construction company first — and that matters when it comes to security film. Our approach goes beyond film installation. We evaluate the entire glazing system to determine whether security film will actually perform as intended. In some cases, installing security film on weak or improperly supported frames provides little real protection and is not a responsible investment. Security film is only as strong as the system holding it in place.

Security Film Applications

Security window film is used to help retain shattered glass, delay forced entry, and reduce injury from glass breakage. Applications extend beyond residential security into commercial and industrial environments. Security film may be used in homes and storefronts, commercial office buildings, industrial facilities and plants, and laboratories and controlled environments. In higher-risk settings, security film systems may be used as part of blast-mitigation or impact-mitigation strategies to help control glass fragmentation.

System Evaluation

Security film bonds effectively to most architectural glass. However, real-world performance is governed primarily by frame strength and condition, anchoring and attachment method, and the connection between the frame and surrounding structure. Glass type and thickness are generally secondary factors. In most failures, the system gives way at the frame or attachment point, not within the film or glass. If a window system cannot adequately support security film, this is identified before installation.

Why Anchoring Matters

In security film systems, edge anchoring is responsible for transferring forces from the glass into the frame. Insufficient anchoring may allow the glass and film to separate from the frame during impact, reducing the effectiveness of the system. Anchoring design must be appropriate for the frame type and application, not treated as a cosmetic detail.

Structural Sealants & Wet-Glaze Systems

In certain commercial and industrial applications, structural silicone sealants such as Dow 995 or 3M IPA may be used as part of a wet-glaze anchoring system. These systems are intended to anchor the film to the frame, retain fractured glass within the opening, and reduce glass dispersal during impact or pressure events. They are not intended to stop penetration, but to support controlled glass retention as part of a complete glazing system.

Is Your Window Suitable for Security Film?

Before recommending security film, we assess frame material and rigidity, frame attachment to the structure, condition of existing glazing and sealants, and the ability to properly anchor the film system. Not every window is a good candidate for security film, and we are upfront when limitations exist.

Important Notice

Security film performance is dependent on the condition, attachment, and structural capacity of the existing glazing system, and results may vary based on frame and building conditions.

Annealed or Tempered Glass?

There is a common misconception in the window film industry about the need to properly anchor security film. At VHI Construction, our goal is to be factual and upfront with our clients. Whether the glass is annealed or tempered, security film must be properly anchored to the frame to perform as intended. Without proper anchoring, the film and fractured glass can disengage from the opening after impact, providing limited security benefit.

French Panes & Small Lites

In many cases, traditional French pane windows are better left as they are. These systems often use annealed glass in smaller sections, which can naturally discourage forced entry when broken. Adding security film to small panes may reduce this resistance unless the frame is large and strong enough to support proper anchoring. For this reason, we are upfront with clients and often recommend not installing security film on French panes.

Where Your Investment May Be Better Placed

In some situations, frame reinforcement, hardware upgrades, door security, or glazing replacement may deliver better results than film alone. We will always recommend the most responsible path based on your building and risk profile.
